For a truly exotic-tasting cup of coffee, you can’t do much better than a fine, gourmet Indonesian coffee. Low in acidity and bursting with delectable flavours, coffee produced in Indonesia is renowned throughout the world for being exceptionally full-bodied and aromatic. Their mellow, earthy tones and low acidity make them ideal for blending with coffees produced elsewhere in the world, and as a result of this, coffee beans from Indonesia are extremely highly sought after – particularly for speciality and gourmet coffees.
Perhaps one of the most famous Indonesian coffees is the Kapal Api brand, which has an unrivalled reputation for sensational flavour combinations and rich aromas. The very name Kapal Api means “steam ship”, and came from what was, at that time, the ultimate symbol of prosperity, luxury and superiority. The name therefore created an image or an association with high qualilty, many generations ago in Indonesia, and the Kapal Api brand grew from strength to strength, becoming popular and well established throughout Indonesia, then Malaysia, and then the rest of the world.
Kapal Api, founded by PT Santos Jaya Abadi, started out in 1927. Now the market leader in Indonesia, as well as internationally successful, the brand had humble beginnings, growing from a simple, small home-based company in Surabaya. It grew and evolved to the point where, in 1970, state of the art equipment and machinery was introduced by the next generation, and the company became large and successful enough to branch out, reaching all of East Java. By 1980 (when the current existing factory in East Java’s Sidoarjo was built), Kapal Api was famous, and had made a name for itself in the production and supply of high quality coffees all over Indonesia.
And so it is that Kapal Api is today one of the most highly regarded and enduringly popular coffees from Indonesia. Many different varieties are available, from the purest ground to unique flavoured mixes. Kapal Api Special is probably the most popular, and is the best one to try for the most pure taste of Indonesian ground coffee. With a full finish and deliciously powerful flavour, this coffee bears all the signature characteristics of genuine Indonesian coffee. Its hearty aroma is distinctive and unmistakable, and the mellow, earthy tones within make Kapal Api Special live up to its name! There’s also Kapal Api Special Mix, which contains all of the same traits but comes mixed with sugar for a delightful sweet contrast to the strong coffee flavours. And for a truly indulgent treat, it’s possible to buy Kapal Api Mocha, which adds a hint of chocolate to the mix.
PT Santos Jaya Abadi’s success in the coffee industry is undisputed, and the name is synonymous with the true flavours and aromas of Indonesian coffee. As well as the main brand, Kapal Api, PT Santos Jaya Abadi is also responsible for a large variety of other popular brands, such as Good Day, Kapten, ABC, Ya and Excelso. Kapal Api remains the most special and revered, however – the true, pure flavour of Indonesian coffee.
